THE criticism from PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri towards Anies Baswedan during the announcement of the party’s gubernatorial candidates in Jakarta on Monday (8/26/2024) will only increase antipathy towards the white-bull-logo party.
Moreover, Anies’ name was notably absent from the list of candidates that PDIP was set to sponsor. Previously, there had been strong indications that Anies would be paired with the actor, politician, and former Governor of Banten, Rano Karno.
Rumors had been widespread until Monday before the announcement: Anies Baswedan Rano Karno. But after the announcement, citing ongoing deliberations, the pair for the Jakarta gubernatorial election was not yet announced, leaving the situation for East Java open.
That morning, Anies appeared confident as he left for the PDIP headquarters, having sought blessings from his mother.
That morning Anies was seen wearing a red woven outfit at his residence in Lebak Bulus, Cilandak, South Jakarta. Anies is one of the gubernatorial candidates who has been in communication with PDIP for the Jakarta election.
Anies then said goodbye and sought blessings from his mother, Aliyah Rasyid Baswedan, and his wife, Ferry Farhati, in the living room. “Anies is leaving now, please bless me so that today goes smoothly,” Anies was quoted as saying from an official statement on Monday (8/26/2024).
As scheduled, Anies then visited the PDIP Central Executive Office on Diponegoro Street No. 58, Jakarta, that afternoon. There, Anies met with Rano Karno until just before the announcement. It seems Anies knew his name would not be called.
PDIP’s Treasurer General Olly Dondokambey stated the party chose their own cadres, Pramono Anung Rano Karno, to advance. Anies, who had been present at the headquarters, did not appear during the announcement.
“DKI Pramono Rano,” Olly stated via text message, citing CNN Indonesia (Monday, 8/26/2024, 16:30 WIB).
The reason for Megawati’s decision not to sponsor Anies remains unknown. PDIP’s Election Campaign Head, Adian Napitipulu, also declined to comment on the rumor.
Previously, Megawati was rumored to be preparing to nominate Anies for the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election alongside Rano Karno. Eventually, Megawati and PDIP chose Pramono Anung Rano Karno for the November 2024 Jakarta election.
If Megawati’s previous speeches are anything to go by, the signs that the daughter of Bung Karno would reject Anies Baswedan were quite clear and blatant. On several occasions, Megawati indirectly criticized and scoffed at Anies though not naming him calling him a “freeloader” among other things.
Previously, Megawati mentioned being asked to support Anies Baswedan for the 2024 gubernatorial election. She questioned this request.
She initially talked about an event staff at a PDIP event who brought a picture of Anies Baswedan. She then questioned the staff.
“Oh yeah, so I want to talk, can I digress, someone just talked about Jakarta, and then in front, I was surprised, right, there’s a red and black shirt, but they put up a banner to carry Mr. Anies, right? Who didn’t see, I saw it.”
“That’s why I asked, where is he, Mr. Komar, ‘What task force is that?’, it’s called the black task force, then Mr. Komar said, ‘Oh that task force indeed wants to support Mr. Anies, Ma’am’,” Megawati said during a speech at PDIP’s headquarters, Jakarta, Thursday (8/22/2024).
“Oh really, eh I said, ‘Hey easy there, why should I support Mr. Anies’, he really wants to join PD
IP? If he wants to join PDIP, don’t do it like that, just want to obey, right, yes,” Megawati said as in the viral video.
Anies Baswedan responded to Megawati’s question whether he would obey if nominated by PDIP. Anies believes Megawati’s statement relates to the constitutional mandate.
“So we all realize that she (Megawati) refers to the constitutional mandate, the ideals of the state, the ideals to realize a united Indonesia, diverse but together,” Anies told reporters after visiting the PDIP Provincial Executive Board, Jakarta, Saturday (8/24/2024).
Anies did not explicitly answer whether he would obey or not. However, he confirmed it would be a common reference. “That’s what we then take as a common reference,” he said.
Rejecting Anies
Megawati’s refusal to nominate Anies Baswedan in the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial contest could be a political compromise between PDIP’s top brass and KIM Plus (read: Gerindra and the Palace representing the President). In essence, PDIP could join, provided they do not sponsor Anies.
Pramono Anung’s name was one of the names touted to be sponsored by PDIP in Jakarta, alongside Anies Baswedan and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok. Pramono is currently serving as the Cabinet Secretary in Joko Widodo’s administration.
When delivering instructions at the Third Phase Cakada Announcement for the 2024 Election at PDIP’s headquarters, Menteng Central Jakarta, on Monday (8/26/2024), Megawati stated that if one wants to be a member of her party, they must join body and soul.
Megawati initially talked about political dynamics. She claimed she was taught about dialectics by Bung Karno.
“So if we look at these political dynamics, this is dialectics for me, Bung Karno taught me dialectics, so we can see it like that. Then later see action-reaction like that, right,” Megawati expressed.
Megawati emphasized that joining PDIP requires full commitment. “Later I will teach all that, who doesn’t want to obey just like that, I’m tired because they want to join PDI Perjuangan or just ride along, like that, I don’t want it anymore,” she said.
“Yes, just be consistent, yes if you want to join DPI Perjuangan then be with the spirit of PDI Perjuangan,” she added.
Apparently, Megawati is traumatized by the candidacy of her party officials in the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections, which she believes have betrayed PDIP. Who, in recent years, have started to betray and abandon Megawati.
Apparently, Megawati can’t distinguish between Anies Baswedan and Joko Widodo. Anies is not Jokowi who is full of imaging and lies. The Esemka car used for imaging is still missing to this day, although reportedly there have been many orders.
When serving as Governor of DKI Jakarta (2019-2022), Anies proved successful in receiving awards from various institutions for his achievements. Not because of imaging. Because of his achievements and real work evidence during his tenure, the people of Jakarta and political parties asked him to run in the 2024 gubernatorial election.
Several groups of citizens in Jakarta and political parties that were previously part of the Change Coalition like PKS, NasDem, and PKB had also declared their support for Anies Baswedan by offering Sohibul Iman as the vice-gubernatorial candidate.
However, PKS defected by offering the name Suswono to KIM Plus. Thus, the Ridwan Kamil Suswono (Rawon) pair will be registered at the Jakarta Election Commission. PKS has really left Anies Baswedan and joined the Palace Coalition.
So, back to Megawati’s statement above, Anies doesn’t want to ride on PDIP’s vehicle. But, he actually provides an opportunity to win the Jakarta gubernatorial election. Because in terms of electability, Anies is always the highest and top, above Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and Ridwan Kamil.
Offering Ahok would clearly be disadvantageous for PDIP itself. He previously lost in the 2017 gubernatorial election against Anies. If Anies ultimately cannot compete in the 2024 gubernatorial election, it is likely that the pair sponsored by KIM Plus (Rawon) has the potential to win.
Pramono Anung Rano Karno will be the “bride” ready to be defeated by Rawon, commanded by Gerindra. As long as Jokowi is still in office, anything will be done by the Palace Coalition to obstruct Anies Baswedan.
