JAKARTA | KBA Anies Baswedan shared his statement regarding his non-participation in the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election, as the registration had closed early Thursday morning, August 30, 2024.
He expressed regret for not being able to participate in the Jakarta gubernatorial election due to the unfulfilled aspirations of the poor urban communities.
“If you ask me if there are regrets, yes, there are regrets. What do I regret? The aspirations of the residents of the poor urban communities, the poor city folk who came to this house,” Anies stated during his YouTube broadcast as reported by KBA News, in South Jakarta, Thursday, August 30, 2024.
He explained that the poor urban population often visited his home, especially after the 2024 Presidential Election was concluded. They sought help to restore their conditions.
“Now, 1.5 years of efforts have vanished, starting from improving slum neighborhoods to enhancing their economic conditions which have always been our focus,” Anies revealed.
The former Minister of Education and Culture feels heavily burdened seeing the condition of the residents of Kampung Bayam, who are still neglected by the Jakarta Provincial Government.
“It’s hard to see the residents of Kampung Bayam left neglected, it’s burdensome,” he explained.
“Seeing the neighborhoods every time we visit, they ask, ‘please resolve this,'” added Anies.
The Governor of Jakarta from 2017-2022 feels sad seeing other community members he visited. The locals often requested him to resolve the issues they are facing.
“It’s hard if they cannot find resolution to their efforts to improve their welfare. That, if asked about regrets, is how the poor in Jakarta, who are our focus, can’t have their hopes fulfilled by me,” he added.
Furthermore, Anies apologized to all the residents of the neighborhoods in Jakarta, for not being able to help through the pathway of authority and policy making. But, Anies said, this does not mean that their struggle stops here.
“To all my brothers and sisters, the neighborhood residents in Jakarta, the poor city folk, I apologize because I can’t help through the pathway of authority, policy making. But it doesn’t mean our struggle stops here, and it doesn’t mean our efforts end here, no,” he emphasized.
“In other ways, we will continue to fight together to improve the conditions of the poor city folk who are currently facing significant challenges,” Anies continued. (kba)
